Winter Reflection, El Capitan reflected in the Merced River, Yosemite

Yosemite in winter is all about Horsetail Fall and (fingers crossed) fresh snow. My 2013 Yosemite Winter Scenes and Horsetail Fall photo workshop is February 10-13.

Here's what all the excitement is about. While this image from three years ago is quite spectacular, it's also just one of thousands of similar Horsetail Fall images. Like many "iconic" landscape subjects, capturing Horsetail Fall is more a matter of persistence and good fortune than photographic skill or artistic inspiration.

Yosemite is not all about iconic landmarks. There are many really nice scenes that you won't find magazine covers or postcards. One of my favorites is this one from the bridge over Cascade Creek (on Big Oak Flat Road). I've always enjoyed the curve of the creek here, and the small tree (lower left) jutting from the granite at a 45 degree angle). It was snowing pretty hard as I brought my group to this spot but we were able to spend some real quality time here.

  2. Hey Gary, looks like you had some beautiful snowy weather during your trip. The images are spectacular, and I am saddened by the fact that I could not make it. Hopefully I will be able to come on another of your workshops soon!
